Welcome to Long Beach Comic Con

When I dusted off all the outlines of my dream of a Superhero Ninja Mom and her family two years ago, I knew in my heart that the fans who would resonate with the story and characters were found at the Comic Conventions. Even though the first Ninja Mom movie series will be live-action, there is a sense of the playfulness and supernaturalness of comics that have always inspired my vision. Maybe watching all those cartoons (Flintstones, Jetsons, Dennis the Menace) growing up played a part?

The first convention I introduced Nina Mom to was the international Comic Con in San Diego. The first year we only had postcards and business cards, however, almost everyone I met responded positively and all the cards and postcards were gone within hours. This year we stepped it up and made comic book style promotional booklets and buttons. I enjoyed some cosplay with volunteer Jani Wang (as Ninja Girl) and the response was even better than last year.

Last weekend marks the first time I introduced Ninja Mom to the Long Beach Comic Con attendees and participants. It is the second year for this convention and it is refreshing. It draws a manageable crowd of approximately 6,000-7,000 people and even during rush hour, there is room to breathe, meet the wonderful artists and admire the fabulous costumed attendees. I had the privilege of sharing a table with my Ninjutsu Sensei Don Schmidt. He is a wonderful artist and he allowed me to display my Ninja Mom flyers, hachimaki headbands, and take lots of pictures with cosplay characters all from his home base at Table 1510.

Jani joined me on Saturday and we were even interviewed for a live streaming broadcast with Fandom Planet‘s Sax Carr by Social Media Ninja Sam Proof. On Sunday I was interviewed by Nancy Wride at Patch.com.

We collected more email addresses, Twitter and Facebook names from interested fans and had a lot of fun. My number one favorite part about following this dream and attending these conventions is still the children.

The boys especially seem to really think having a Ninja Mom is cool! My second favorite part is meeting all the amazing artists and writers. I am in awe of their talent and what they have accomplished. I hope to work with many of them on animation and comic strip ideas as the brand unfolds. My favorite quote of the Con was from our Artist Alley neighbor, Peter from Cuddly Capes, “We are so excited about Ninja Mom. We love Ninjas and Moms are just cool!”
